Recovery from profound hypothermia with cardiac arrest after immersion.

are small, however, and a larger study would be necessary to confirm this observation. It has been suggested that a high intake of fibre can cause increased faecal bile acid excretion and hence decrease serum cholesterol concentration (Trowell, 1972). However, all the evidence does not support this hypothesis as is shown in the review by Cummings (1973). In this present study increased dietary fibre was not associated with any change in serum cholesterol concentration. The association of dietary fibre and diverticular disease is relatively well established (Painter, 1968, 1969; Painter and Burkitt, 1971). It would appear from the results of the present study that the possible therapeutic effect of bran or cellulose in preventing or treating diverticular disease is largely due to the ability of these substances to increase stool bulk. From the data presented it is calculated that an 80-kg man passing 100 g stool per day would excrete faeces equivalent to his body weight about every two years. By the ingestion of 16 g of bran or cellulose daily this output would be achieved in only 12 months. Significant alteration in colonic work load, intestinal function, and, possibly, in susceptibility of the bowel to pathological processes may be achieved by relatively minor alterations in dietary habit.

Asystolic Cardiac Arrest of Unknown Duration in Profound Hypothermia and Polysubstance Overdose: A Case Report of Complete Recovery
BACKGROUND Opioid addiction and overdose is a serious problem worldwide. Fatal overdoses from opioids are responsible for numerous deaths and are increasing, especially if taken in combination with other psychoactive substances. Combined with environmental exposure, opioid overdose can cause profound hypothermia. Opioid abuse and other drugs of abuse impair thermoregulation, leading to severe h...
متن کاملInduction of profound hypothermia for emergency preservation and resuscitation allows intact survival after cardiac arrest resulting from prolonged lethal hemorrhage and trauma in dogs.
BACKGROUND Induction of profound hypothermia for emergency preservation and resuscitation (EPR) of trauma victims who experience exsanguination cardiac arrest may allow survival from otherwise-lethal injuries. Previously, we achieved intact survival of dogs from 2 hours of EPR after rapid hemorrhage. We tested the hypothesis that EPR would achieve good outcome if prolonged hemorrhage preceded c...
متن کاملCardiopulmonary resuscitation following profound immersion hypothermia.
A case is presented in which prolonged resuscitation and rewarming was performed following post-rescue cardiopulmonary arrest in severe immersion hypothermia. The rescue and resuscitation techniques necessary to optimise outcome in such cases are described.

INTRODUCTION Victims of severe hypothermia and cardiac arrest may appear dead. They are often unresponsive to on-scene resuscitation including defibrillation while profoundly hypothermic. Several cases of extreme hypothermia and prolonged cardiac arrest with good outcome have been published. We present a case of heart rate monitored (by pulse-watch) hypothermia, prolonged cardiac arrest and sur...
متن کاملMild hypothermia in improving multiple organ dysfunction after cardiac arrest.
BACKGROUND Resuscitation after cardiac arrest (CA) with a whole-body ischemia-reperfusion injury causes brain injury and multiple organ dysfunction (MODS). This study aimed to determine whether mild systemic hypothermia could decrease multiple organ dysfunctions after resuscitation from cardiac arrest. METHODS The patients who had been resuscitated after cardiac arrest were reviewed. During t...
متن کاملDelayed hypothermia preferentially increases expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor exon III in rat hippocampus after asphyxial cardiac arrest.
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) protein levels increase in rats treated with a regimen of delayed, mild hypothermia that improve neurological recovery after asphyxial cardiac arrest. BDNF transcription in rat brain involves at least five different BDNF exons (exons I-V) that produce four different varieties of mRNA, each containing exon V paired with one of exons I-IV. This study exami...
